QUEEN'S CHAPTER MEETING: Thursday, February 22nd

This month's meeting presentation is:

Verifying Concrete Mix Design for PEs

Our lecture will be presented by William H. Fitzjohn, Jr., PhD, PE

The purpose of this 1-Hr. presentation is to provide guidance on technical aspects required to verify the effective use of concrete mix designs with primary emphasis on NYC Building Code provisions.

Objectives: Upon completion of the presentation participants should be able to understand the description and nomenclatures of:

• What a concrete mix design  is
• Comprehend what a TR3 is
• Understand the mix design review process
• Comprehend relevant ASTM, job specifications and NYC Building Code provisions
• Verify whether a concrete batch ticket matches an approved TR3 mix design
• Recognize interpretations of complex code requirements

There will also be good information for engineers who review mix designs for conformance with their specifications prior to submittals of TR3 mix deigns to DOB for approval.

The basic steps from development of a mix design to its use by the concrete cast-in- place special inspector and concrete field testing technician are:
1. Lab or ready mix producer develops mix design (s) and prepare TR3 (tech report for mix designs)
2. Design applicant/EOR reviews and approves
3. TR3 submitted to DOB for review and approval
4. Concrete based on TR3 ordered by contractor
5. Special inspector and concrete field tech verify that concrete delivered by concrete producer matches approved TR3 mix deign

About the Speaker: William H. Fitzjohn, Jr., PhD, PE has extensive experience covering: construction materials engineering, concrete mix designs, materials testing and special inspections, and quality management systems. He holds a BSCE (Honors) from Manchester University, UK, and a PhD in Civil Engineering/Ceramic Science from the University of Leeds, UK. In addition, he is a licensed professional engineer in the states of California, and New York has numerous certifications in concrete inspection and testing from ACI and ICC.
